1. First possibility: I suspect your house is too large. Housing requirements have changed since 1.1 ( here's a link to an outdated article on housing at the terraria wiki ). As of 1.1, a house needed to be a minimum of 60 tiles and a max of 750 (in addition to the other considerations).

As the others have said it is simply the dirt walls that are preventing the spawning and it being valid. Housing can only be valid if you place the walls and and bottom/sides/roof (as far as I've noticed). Good luck fixing it and enjoy Terraria.

For housing, you need to use "Player Dirt Wall" as the wall type for houses, otherwise it won't work. Just select the brush tool, set a large cursor, change the paint mode to wall, select Player Dirt Wall, and swipe over the area.
