Supermassive black hole

Sagittarius A* (/ ˈ eɪ s t ɑːr / AY star), abbreviated Sgr A* (/ ˈ s æ dʒ ˈ eɪ s t ɑːr / SAJ AY star), is the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center of the Milky Way.Viewed from Earth, it is located near the border of the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius, about 5.6° south of the ecliptic, visually close to the Butterfly Cluster (M6) and Lambda Scorpii.

Supermassive black hole. The first observational hints for supermassive black holes . The discovery of quasi-stellar objects, abbreviated quasars or QSOs, generated a lot of interest. These were first detected as compact radio sources in all-sky surveys in the late 1950s without optical counterparts. Eventually, in the early 1960s, optical astronomers found visible blue

Quasars, which are exceptionally bright objects at the centres (or nuclei) of galaxies, are thought to be produced through the accretion of gas into disks surrounding supermassive black holes1–3. A 2010 paper suggested that the black hole may be displaced from the galactic center by about seven parsecs (23 light-years). This was claimed to be in the opposite direction of the known jet, indicating acceleration of the black hole by it. Another suggestion was that the offset occurred during the merger of two supermassive black holes.

Supermassive black holes contain between one hundred thousand and ten billion times more mass than our Sun. As of 2022, there are over 150 confirmed supermassive black holes in our local Universe (with direct mass measurements). They typically exist at the centre of large galaxies, including the centre of our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
