The scythe, along with the assassin armor, is good for a critical hit build. Although it acts like an axe it is influenced by the assassin (dagger) mutation. Other good mutations are ones that help with crits. Trapper peeper and coup de grass along with apex predator and assassin would be my set up for the scythe.

The wiki shows the Scythe doing more damage with the second and third hits, and adding up to more overall. It also points out that it gives an ability that doubles crit damage, and you said you wore assassin' armor which is based entirely on critical hits.
