Mechanically, the 30AS is a 336 with a different labeling stamp. I think (not sure) that the 30AS was only available in 30-30.A 1X-4X will be effective at greater distances than the .35 Remington is practical for a shot at game. At the low end, you can find the game animal at 15yds to 20yds in thick cover. At 4X, if you know the drop, you can easily place the shot, (or at least the crosshairs), out to 300yds.
